The Role:

Working with a cohesive and tightknit team, you are a solution- oriented resource on policy and contract interpretation supporting a cross section of departments at NW Natural. Your ability to lead with emotional intelligence will help you understand varying interests among the stakeholders you support while you develop trust and collaborative relationships along the way. In this position, you hold a critical role providing advanced professional consultation and facilitation to department directors and managers throughout the Company. You are relied upon as a trusted subject matter expert in Employee and Labor Relations policies, practices and decisions. You are part of a larger team of HR professionals who are passionate about their work and have fun working together. Day to Day:

  • Guides and assists management and employees on a wide variety of human resources issues and concerns, including employee engagement, discipline, conflict management, performance management, and discrimination/harassment, to ensure fair treatment of employees, and compliance with Company policies, applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations, and the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Investigates complaints, issues and concerns regarding Company policies and employment practices. Coordinates with other departments to ensure appropriate level of investigation. Ensures appropriate documentation is maintained. Partners with legal counsel to ensure consistency and compliance as needed.
  • Provides consultation to employees and managers through the ADA Reasonable Accommodation interactive process.
  • Performs advanced research and analysis of Employee Relations and Labor Relations policies and procedures, and develops recommendations.
  • Manages or participates in both HR and company short and long-term projects, including supporting the Company’s negotiations preparation team. Assists in the development and implementation of the HR Strategic Plan.
  • Advises management on the application and interpretation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Assists in the resolution of grievance and issues through the grievance process. Advises on the appropriate level of discipline and corrective action.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to proactively address concerns that impact team or individual performance. Assist with conflict resolution strategies.
  • Develops and maintains mutual, respectful and trusted relationships with management, employees and union representatives. Engages with union and management to stay abreast of current and future employee relations and labor relations issues to proactively address changes or concerns.
  • Occasional (typically, once per quarter) overnight travel.
  • Develops and conducts Employee Relations and Labor Relations management and supervisory training.
  • Supports Company’s commitment to a culture of safe work practices.

Come on your first day with:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in business, human resources, labor relations or equivalent discipline/experience.
  • 8-10 years’ experience (recent experience preferred) in labor and/or employee relations and a working knowledge of other human resources disciplines.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of employees, resolve difficult situations, conduct appropriate interventions, facilitate problem-solving activities, and remain calm under pressure.
  • Skill and experience in handling human resources situations with confidentiality, sensitivity, and discretion while providing clear and concise direction.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws applicable to medical leave
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations and court decisions applicable to employee and labor relations.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and laws of labor relations, including negotiation and contract administration practices.
  • Demonstrated organizational abilities to manage multiple projects/work initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong writing skills, including process documentation and report preparation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a team member within and across organizational lines to achieve company goals.
  • Demonstrated collaborative and creative problem solving and thinking skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and take initiative within established guidelines.

Base salary range: $87,300.00 – $124,350.00 per year, depending on qualifications

Annual Target Incentive: Level 3, 9.5% target
Targets are calculated using eligible earnings during plan year participation. Payout, if earned, is based on company and individual performance for each plan year and may range from 0% – 200% of target. Targets are subject to change in subsequent plan years. Must be employed by September 30 in order to receive any prorated payout.
