Human Resources Business Partner

The Human Resources (HR) Business Partner provides HR guidance for assigned departments to ensure effective planning and implementation of key initiatives that affect the workforce. Through this work as an internal resource you will establish credibility with leaders as a valuable sounding board for business and people issues. You will effectively partner with other members of the Human Resources Team to develop and implement key strategies and initiatives to meet business objectives and/or manage a variety of Human Resource projects as needed. Works independently and deals with confidential information on a daily basis while reporting to the HR management level.



Performed majority of the time:

·         Working with customer groups to facilitate resolution of employee relations issues, labor relations issues, redeployment including organizational structure changes, performance management, and compensation needs.

·         Providing coaching and leadership skills development, as needed, to enhance workforce engagement, development, retention and succession planning.

·         Counseling leaders and management to ensure consistent application and integration of policies, procedures, practices, and the collective bargaining agreement(s). Counsel leaders on employee relations investigations.   Develops new policies, practices, and procedures to align with business objectives.

·         Monitoring and administering practices to ensure customer departments comply with FLSA, Wage & Hour, FMLA, OFLA, ADA, EEOC, ERISA, regulatory bodies, and applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules and regulations that pertain to HR management.

·         Keep the “pulse” of assigned departments and identify and facilitate needed interventions.

·         When appropriate, conducts appropriate and timely investigations in regards to concerns brought forward, regardless of level within the organization.

·         Works collaboratively with the Human Resources team to consistently apply practice across the organization as a whole and proactively solve challenges

Performed occasionally but critical to successful performance of the job:

·         Understanding and application of how total compensation applies to the workforce.

·         Understanding and application of workforce planning and staffing practices.

·         Interviewing and coaching and counseling managers on making sound hiring decisions that support the overall organization goals.

Decision making and budget responsibilities:

·         Decision making related to strategic coaching/counseling directly tied to business partner function.

·         No budgeting responsibilities.




·         Bachelor’s degree.

o   Candidates with 7+ years HR experience directly connected to employee coaching/counseling/relations, and/or labor/union relations may also be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.


·         Bachelor’s in Business Administration or Human Resources Management.



·         A minimum of 5 years’ progressively responsible HR experience with generalist exposure to multiple HR functions, or equivalent combination of HR training/ experience in areas of employee coaching/ counseling/ relations, labor relations, or organizational development.


·         Experience working in a strategic HR Business Partner model within a healthcare organization.

·         Previous labor relations or union contract negotiation/implementation highly preferred; to ensure proper support of the organization labor relations experience may be required in individual postings.

·         Previous health care experience.

Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations:


·         None required.


·         PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SCP certification preferred.

Job Related Skills, Abilities and Behaviors:


·         Working knowledge of State and Federal Leave laws and Wage and Hour laws.

·         Broad knowledge of other areas of Human Resources responsibilities including hiring/recruiting, training and development, HRIS systems, unemployment, worker’s compensation, leave administration, regulatory compliance, benefits, and compensation.

·         Presents self in a professional manner when dealing with customers and co-workers at all levels within the organization.

·         Organized and timely with responding to requests, holds self to high standards and is accountable, and provides excellent customer service.

·         Ability to speak to groups and give presentations. Uses effective communication skills.


·         Bilingual skills a plus.
